I sat on a bench in the hot sun outside the Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned, and ate a sandwich before continuing. You literally walk across the airport runway (somewhat nervously looking out for an approaching Airbus!) observing the sign which advises you to cross briskly and not to drop litter which could cause a fatal accident.
A quick flash of my passport and I had walked into Spain! The car hire office was easy to find, but the clerk complained that I was late. Apparently he normally shuts for lunch although I had not been made aware of this. I walked to the underground car park and found my Peugeot 308 which refused to open with the remote fob. I hesitated to use the key in case that set off the alarm. A good start!
The next task was to exit the car park. At the barrier I pressed the call button, but there was no reply. Was the attendant having lunch or a siesta? How long might I have to wait? Cars were approaching behind me, so in desperation I drove back into the bowels of the car park. With some relief I spotted the manned exit and escaped the subterranean labyrinth. I set the satnav for Medina Sidonia and joined the bustling traffic of La Linea.
